This super little kitchen was less grand than Mark Hilton-Tapp expected. About six grand less. The kitchen of his home in Totley was small, but the bill for revamping it looked like being huge. Mark and his wife Sue obtained quotes from kitchen companies that wanted to charge a great deal - and their designs were not so hot.
Innovative ideas were needed to utilise all available space. The Hilton-Tapps asked friends to recommend a kitchen comapny, and Mark spoke to business colleagues. He is factory manager at Christmas Blinds, of Heeley, his family's business.
One kitchen company name was varying from modern and sleek, to traditional. He is greatly helped by the fact that SKO manufacture all their kitchens on-site, which means he can easily liaise with craftsmen who build everything to his plans.
Sko's units are colour-matchend while they are being built, so fitters do not have to stick on edgings that will eventually peel off. Mark and Sue liked Keith's use of 'round-the-corner' shelving which slides out for easy access.
For their units, they chose'New Jersey style cabinet, in pale vanilla shade. The worktops are a wood-block design, featuring a 'capillary groove' that ensures excess water runs off, thus avoiding the problem of water penetration, which can quickly ruin units.
Appliances in the kitchen now include a dishwasher (there wasn't space for one before), plus a built-in double oven, a seperate cupboard storage unit with a wine rack, and a built-in microwave.
Keith smartened up the area around the fridge-freezer by incorporating a shelving unit above it, which is finished in the same wood as the worksurfaces.
Says Mark: "We are delighted with Sheffield Kitchen Outlet. They were very professional to deal with, and their price was fantastic. Our kitchen looks great, and it's easier to use because everything is in the right place. Plus, there's tons more storage space."
